Mental Health Matters: November Edition

November is Early Childhood Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to recognize how vital emotional well-being is in the first years of life. From a baby’s first smile to a preschooler’s growing independence, every interaction shapes how children understand themselves and the world around them.

💛 By nurturing secure, supportive relationships, families and caregivers lay the foundation for resilience, empathy, and lifelong mental health. Small moments — listening, validating feelings, or offering comfort — make a lasting difference.

Staff Highlight: Meet Shannon!

We’re excited to highlight Shannon, one of our dedicated pediatric physical therapists who brings heart, energy, and expertise to every session!

What inspired her career and what she loves most about working with young children:
“Growing up I always knew I wanted to work with children. I also had a love for health and fitness. Once I started studying for my doctorate, I took a pediatric course and I loved the class. I then had a clinical rotation that I loved as well and became my first job in physical therapy where I worked for 11 years. I love seeing children accomplish milestones and goals! They are so happy and so are their parents so it’s double the happiness :)”
If she weren’t a physical therapist, she’d be:
“If I wasn’t a physical therapist, I would be a kindergarten teacher!”
How her culture and life experiences shape her work:
“My first child had difficulties with sensory processing and anxiety. I experienced a lot with him and grew as a person, parent and professional over those years. He taught be so much which I have been able to use in my profession daily.”
What she wishes more people understood about early intervention and physical therapy:
“I would love for others to understand that play is a child’s job and through therapy and play we can accomplish so much in many areas of development.”
Favorite childhood game or toy:
“I loved jumping rope! We had a jump rope team in elementary school (never heard of it anywhere else) but it gave me so many memories over those years including parades, and other events within the community.”
Her hobbies when she’s treating children:
“I love to run! I’ve run 4 marathons and plan to run my 5th in the spring.”

💛 Family Focus: Growing Gratitude Every Day

November is the perfect time to slow down and help children notice the good around them. Gratitude isn’t just about saying “thank you” — it’s about building empathy, mindfulness, and connection. Here are a few easy ways to weave gratitude into everyday routines:

🌅 Morning Moments: Start the day with a “gratitude stretch.” As your child wakes up, invite them to name one thing they’re excited about or thankful for.

🍽️ Mealtime Sharing: Take turns around the table saying one thing that made you smile that day — big or small. It helps kids learn that joy can be found in simple moments.

🛏️ Bedtime Reflections: End the day with a calm “thankful thought.” Ask, “What’s one kind thing someone did for you today?” or “What’s something you loved about today?”

🎨 Creative Gratitude: Make a “Thankful Tree” or “Gratitude Jar” where your child can add notes or drawings of things they appreciate. Over time, you’ll both have a visual reminder of life’s little joys.
